Original Email sent to various organizations in Indiana :
Dear Sir,
I have made a bet with my best friend on the origin of the nickname for the State of Indiana: "Hoosier."
I am sure it came from when the discoverer of Indiana, (I forget his name) was making love to his wife he used to shout "Who's your Daddy?! Who's your Daddy?!" This phrase was shortened by the fine people of Indiana to "Hoosier Daddy" and finally to just plain "Hoosier." My idiotic best friend says it comes from John Finley's poem, "The Hoosier's Nest," which was used as the "Carrier's Address" of the Indianapolis Journal, Jan. 1, 1833.
Which one of us is correct?
We have ten dollars riding on this.
Thank You,
Doug

Response from the Indiana War Memorial Commission:
Unfortunately, I don't have the answer to that question. One of my co-workers here claims it had to do with the way Indiana residents asked "Who's there" when someone came knocking.

Response from the Indiana State Information Center:
Doug, I would not say your friend actually won but he is much closer to the
origin than you. There are various theories ot the word "Hoosier".
The phrase "hoosier daddy" is a relatively new term of the last 20 years or less.
